Dirranbandi Business Futures Workshop
Equipped to Discover travelled to Dirranbandi in regional South West Queensland, Australia. Located approximately 500km’s inland from Brisbane, Dirranbandi is an agricultural farming hub that relies on water to sustain agricultural operations in the region. Dirranbandi is home to ‘Cubbie Station‘ the largest cotton growing farm in the Southern Hemisphere
Impacted by the Australian Government water ‘buy back’ scheme, many farmers have opted to sell their water allocation, and leave the area for good. This has left Dirranbandi township stranded with depleting house prices, depleting services, businesses struggling to progress beyond their debt boundaries and the future of Dirranbandi community is now hotly debated…..above all, the townspeople are seeking support from whatever means is necessary.
Our attendees discussed, at length, how to quarantine collateral risks, how to measure the impact and how to ascertain a suitable foundation to turn around the impact that the town has endured and begin a rebuilding process. “It is about putting the past behind us and looking to the future”, “things just won’t happen by themselves, we have to make it happen…”.

The spirit of the people that attended the workshop was incredible, “we love this place, and we are worried it will change forever unless we do something about it”, Dirranbandi truly is the heart of what the Australian way of life is all about.

We are completely grateful of the Balonne Shire Council for engaging Equipped to Discover to deliver a ‘business futures’ program for the benefit of the community of Dirranbandi. The program focusses on sustainability and growth. Understanding what the “business”, in this case the “community”, needs to be sustainable and then what it needs to grow.
Being the first workshop of its kind in the world, the Equipped to Discover, Dirranbandi, Business Futures Workshop was developed to positively influence progress, it focusses on:
